Robert Swift Obituary

SWIFT - Robert S.  “Bob”
Of Amherst, formerly of Kenmore, September 9, 2018;

Husband of the late Ruth Hyatt Swift; dear father of Robert “R.B.” (Judy) Swift and Nancy (James) Irvine; loving grandfather of David Swift, Brian (Kelly) Swift, Jennifer (Royce Stewart) Irvine, Matthew (Amelia) Irvine and Michael (Penelope Rochelle) Irvine; great-grandfather of Reid, Sage, and Bodie Irvine ; brother of the late Thomas (late Lois) Swift; also survived by nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Graveside Service is planned at White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery, 3210 Niagara Falls Blvd., at Tonawanda Creek Rd., Amherst, Saturday (October 6th) at 10:00 AM. Please meet at the cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Kenmore United Methodist Church, 32 Landers Rd., Kenmore, NY 14217, are preferred.

Born in Manhattan on Aug. 18, 1923, Bob grew up in St. Albans, N.Y. and moved with his family to Kenmore, NY in 1939. He graduated from Kenmore Senior High School in 1942 and then served in the Army from 1943 to 1945 during World War II.

 As a young Army medic in Burma, Bob treated gunshot wounds and jungle illnesses such as malaria and yellow fever. Bob was fascinated with the China-Burma-India theatre of World War II. He called it the “forgotten theatre” of the war, but saw more recognition given to the efforts of the American soldiers in that part of the world later in his life.

Bob and the late Ruth M. Hyatt of Kenmore were married in 1949, for 62 years until her death in 2011, after his graduation from the University of Buffalo.

He was employed as a purchaser at the General Motors Engine Plant, Tonawanda, NY for several decades until his retirement. A long-time Kenmore resident, he was a member of Kenmore United Methodist Church.
